Personal Statement:

0065Growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area I was always surrounded by the crush of civilization, as a child I would retreat to find solace in the surrounding wild places. Growing older, I drifted far away from those days of my childhood and became disconnected with the natural world. Only over the last five years have I made a point to reconnect with nature, becoming a very frequent hiker and activist on behalf of conservation efforts. For much of my adult life my main occupation has been that of a waiter or bartender, earning just enough to live comfortably (with the smallest footprint possible) and afford my two passions of rock climbing and backpacking. I have ever been the dreamer, and long has the thought of a full PCT hike haunted me. Now I have forced myself out of the realm of thought and into action. I hope to inspire those people who have always been afraid to make drastic decisions, and also to do my part in helping others reconnect with nature.

079What hiking the PCT means to me:

I was sitting on top of Half Dome one beautiful summery day, looking at a map of Yosemite when I noticed a trail running through labeled Pacific Crest Trail. Upon further research I became enamored with the idea of a thru hike along the spine of the western US. When I think of the PCT I think of history, rugged wilderness and its intersections with humanity, nighttime vistas unspoiled by the light pollution of our modern society, kindred spirits drawn back into the bosom of the natural world, vast personal growth potential, and a true test of spirit. Hiking the PCT means celebrating the wilderness and its vital role in human existence.

Why I’m participating with mYAMAdventure:

078I hope to gain knowledge under the expert tutelage of experienced thru hikers, the fellowship and support of the rest of the YAMA 2014 team, and the gear being provided is a huge help for a thru hiker on a budget such as myself. I hope to bring enthusiasm and the camaraderie of hiker trash to the table, and maybe a few mountain lion stories. I’ve heard YAMA makes great products and that the customer service is very reliable, partnering with a sponsor that I can trust seems very win-win to me. Finally I am really stoked to raise some cash for the Pacific Crest Trail Association, without whom our selected endeavor would be exponentially more difficult.

Why the PCTA is important:

Maintaining a trail which is over 2,600 miles long is a complex and daunting task. Without the PCTA trails wouldn’t be maintained and would soon fall into a state of disrepair, mountain bikers would overrun and ruin the PCT, the trail would lose its most important advocate, and potential thru hikers wouldn’t have such a great wealth of trail information to utilize. Mankind is losing its connection with nature, the PCTA seeks to rekindle a love for the natural world in the hearts of man.

The Pacific Crest Trail Association plays a pivotal role in the protection of possibly the most scenic hiking trail on Earth. As more and more land is utilized for human needs each year, our wild places become more important than ever. Please do your part to support this vital non-profit group who has been integral in the construction and maintenance of the PCT, reuniting man with the spirit of the wilderness since 1992.
